White Tongue Causes
Have you ever stuck out your tongue in front of the mirror and thought “why is my tongue white?” There’s actually quite a number of reasons your tongue could turn white or yellow-ish.
One of the more prominent reasons why your tongue could turn white is actually from a combination of Post Nasal Drip and the compounds and gases released from tonsil stones ( why else would I write an article here on it? =] ). The build up typically starts from the back region of the tongue, where the tonsils are located, and spreads upwards towards the front, even potenially spreading to other parts of the mouth tho mostly located on the top of your tongue and roof of your mouth. The top of your tongue stores millions of bacteria underneath it’s surface and when tonsil stones are thrown in the mix, it causes an unpleasant oder that anyone suffering from tonsil stones can attest to.
The things you eat can greatly influence the build up of bacteria on the tongue as well. Especially noteworthy of these are dairy products. Drink a big glass of milk and you’ll not only encourage post nasal drip, but promote tonsil stone growth as well.
If you have tonsils (I’m assuming you do since you’re here) and you find yourself coughing up phlegm alot, you’re more than ten times more prone to get tonsil stones than someone who doesn’t have post nasal drip symptoms.
To help remove the coating on your tongue you can easily pick up a cheap tongue scraper to help aide in removing the build up on the surface of your tongue. Merely brushing it doesn’t result nearly as well as a combination of both. Stay away from coffees and dairy products and you’ll notice a great reduction in the dreaded “white tongue” dun dun duuuuun.
Give it a whirl =] They’re cheap!
